Vintage French Canning Bottle

Old French Kitchen Glass

An old French glass preserving bottle with its original hinged closure and crisp pale green cast.  Once purely practical, it is exactly the sort of everyday object I love finding at the markets.

I use these on the table for water or lemonade, filled with a few garden stems, or simply grouped with old glass and silver.  Useful, imperfect and still very at home on a table.

Some of my best finds at Porte de Vanves happen on cold, rainy Saturdays. The crowds thin out, the vendors have more time to talk, and I inevitably stay longer than I intended. The gentleman I bought this from believed these old bottles were once used for preserving cherries. I brought several home.
